The Word Gatherer

Collectors widely seek the work of contemporary Valley folk artist John Heatwole. This carving took sixty hours to complete, and was made for this museum. It depicts a man in walking clothes, notebook at the ready to gather stories about the Valley and its people. The subject is appropriate, for this artist was also a folklorist, historian, and author. He conducted hundreds of interviews with people throughout the Valley to tell this region’s stories.
