A View of the Rialto Bridge, Venice

Date: ca. 1826

The medium of watercolor is well suited to a picture of Venice, which is itself half water. Here the artist uses the surface of the paper to suggest strong sunlight reflecting off the Grand Canal. Bonington died at age 26 yet became an influential artist in his short life span.
