Spoon stakes help a silversmith create the bowl of a spoon. The bowl is formed by pouring molten tin around the spoon stake and left to harden. Next, the stem is bent down to allow the spoon to lay with the bowl of the spoon in the opening created by the spoon stake. The bowl is then hammered into the tin by using the spoon stake and a heavy hammer. Finally, the bowl's edges are filed, buffed smooth, and polished to the desired finish.
