William Massey and his wife Ruth enjoyed visiting Colonial Williamsburg. One of Massey’s favorite spots was the historic Raleigh Tavern on Duke of Gloucester Street. His fondness for this Williamsburg location inspired the Tavern miniature displayed here. Massey’s tavern is not an exact recreation, but an interpretation of a historic alehouse. Despite being the first miniature Massey made, it shows all the signs of a truly talented artist working at the peak of his ability.
