Surveyor's Compass and Lid

Goldsmith Chandlee came to the Shenandoah Valley in 1775.  First he settled near Stephens City and then moved to Winchester where he built two shops and a brass foundry. Chandlee is especially known for his tall clocks. However, this versatile craftsman also made sundials and compasses. One account said his compasses were made with “fine design, craftsmanship, engraving, and ornate decoration.”
