Surveyor’s Compass

Date: ca. 1806 - 1838

Jacob Bear was one of several members of the Bear family in Rockbridge and Rockingham Counties who were silversmiths or clockmakers. However, his exact relationship with Jehu W. Bear is uncertain. The small size of this compass was certainly easier for a surveyor to transport. This compass does pose one curious question: Bear engraves the term “PATENT”, yet the specific patent is unidentified.
