Study for The Marriage of the Vine and Study for the Fortune of Female Nude (double-sided drawing)

Date: ca. 1884

The front of this double-sided drawing is a preparatory study for one of a series of illustrations Elihu Vedder executed for his 1884 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Originally written in the thirteenth century by a Persian mystic, the poems numbered nearly one thousand. In 1859 the Englishman Edward FitzGerald (1809–1883) selected, translated, and adapted the verses for a modern audience.
