Simeon and the Child

This watercolor depicts a scene from the book of Luke (2:25–32) in the Christian New Testament when the holy family brought the Christ child to the temple in Jerusalem for public presentation, as was the custom according to Jewish law. This routine visit became one of the first occasions when Jesus’s special mission was publicly proclaimed. The aged holy man Simeon immediately recognized the Christ child as the prophesied savior of humanity, which was an identification shared by another elderly sage in the temple that day, the prophetess Anna.
