This is the only known sideboard made by John Shearer. The sideboard was drastically altered over the years, and recent conservation treatments sought to remove these modern changes and return it to its likely original appearance. Thrilling discoveries resulted in the process! We now know that Shearer ebonized, or darkened, the drawer dividers, shell-carved drawer, and reeded, tambour door. He also originally mounted the brass hardware at an angle. And, he included ebonized anchors.
