Side Table

Date: ca. 1810

This side table was based on an ancient form and made from or influenced by a design in Thomas Hope’s book, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. That book was published in 1807 and included patterns from French designers and architects Percier and Fontaine. This table features an inlay made from ebony. This hard, black wood is from a tree found in Asia or Africa. It makes attractive inlay, but most people might be more aware of its use for piano keys. In addition to the inlay, this table also features ebonizing.
