Side Chairs

Date: 1765 - 1770

This is a set of four chairs. At the time they were made, it was the style to line such chairs against a wall. So positioned, their elaborately carved backs became part of the wall’s decorative treatment. Julian Wood Glass Jr. displayed this set of chairs in just that way in his New York residences. Photographs and paintings spanning nearly fifty years show the four chairs lined up against the wall, making a powerful impact beneath an arrangement of paintings.
