Shooting, Autumn

Date: ca. 1785 - 1790

Many collectors over the years have sought the work of George Morland, and this painting and the other two by this artist in this collection show why. His paintings have a fresh and unaffected style. They give us a sense that this artist keenly observed every detail in nature and worked as fast as possible to get it all down on canvas. Morland began his education early by copying Old Master paintings that his father was cleaning or restoring in his workshop. He also attended art school occasionally.

Purchased in 1969 from Newhouse Galleries. Important memorandum to the pair of 'Morland's'. Old Mr. Colnaghi of Pall Mall assured me that George Morland painted the pictures in question and sold them to his father for L25 entered in the books of that firm. He afterwards offered me L100 for them. This occurred in 1861.; Witness H. Calton R. B. Calton.
