The actual Shadows-on-the-Teche is a Greek Revival style plantation home located in New Iberia, Louisiana. Sugarcane planter David Weeks had the home built in the 1830s. His descendent William Weeks Hall bequeathed the home to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1958. Today, this historic home is open to the public.
In the late 1970s, R. Lee Taylor read a newspaper article about a miniature of Shadows-on-the-Teche, a Louisiana historic home. Convinced he could creat a better model, Lee Taylor visited Shadows and obtained its floor plan. He imposed his views of what Shadwos should be while also maintaining a high level of accuracy. Lee Taylor added a grand double staircase not present in the original home. As an added surprise, he also put a ghost in the attic.
