There’s more going on here than the title suggests! A fashionable young gentleman has swept home to join a family group. Meanwhile, the hunt continues on behind him and to his right. There’s a coastal scene in the far background, as well. Such great amount of detail is characteristic of Dutch art. Here Weenix makes it work with bright lighting and intense color. As part of his education, Weenix had traveled to Rome in the mid-1640s. There he became interested in classical landscape, architectural history, and the antique.
