This wooden pig is an example of the small wooden animals made by folk artist Joe Selby. He usually made these decorative little animals to give to his friends as favors or tokens of gratitude. An operating engineer by trade, Joe Selby carved wood as a hobby. His woodcarving talents were widely recognized; he is known to have exhibited his work, and the Valley's Belle Grove Plantation was one of his display venues. Selby was also an outdoorsman and champion archer.
