A Picture Gallery

Date: ca. 1635 - 1640

Cornelis de Baellieur is best known for an elaborate picture—his only dated painting—that is now in the Louvre in Paris. Both that painting and this one present a “collector’s cabinet” of the 1600s. Called a schatzkammer, or treasure room, this space displayed a wealthy person’s art collection and was the forerunner of the modern-day museum. This picture doubtless replicates the objects owned by the collector who commissioned it. So it provides a record of the types of paintings that were available at the time.
