Date: ca. 1773 - 1775
This square five-plate jamb stove plate features a pastoral scene. The German inscription is inspired by a Bible verse, and reads, "I hope for a better time, when all strife shall cease [and when] cows and bears will go with each other on the pasture [and] the wolves will dwell with the lambs." Isaac Zane Jr. called himself “a Quaker for the times.” He owned the iron works where this stove plate was made, was a member of the House of Burgesses, a district magistrate, and a colonel in the Shenandoah militia. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were his friends.
