Idyllic Landscape

Jan Frans van Bloemen was Flemish but worked in Rome, where he painted classical landscapes such as this. Note that the people in this painting are wearing classical dress. That marks this landscape as an “Arcadian” scene, or an imagined image of a peaceful rural past.  Clear light bathes the scene and gives this painting its delicate beauty and power. It takes great skill to brush paint on a canvas and achieve such effect, and this artist was a master at it.
