Donkey Figurine

Date: early-to-mid 1900s

This brown-painted donkey sits on a base that is carved from a solid block of wood. The donkey has a black mane and tail, and a red and green packsaddle. He stands with his ears pinned, expressing discontent. Little is known about Abe Stickley, the artist who is thought to have made this figure, and that of the sleigh in this collection. It is thought that he was the same Abe Stickley who operated a hardware store and made cabinets in Strasburg. When he died in 1961, his house was valued at $6,500, and his tools at $400.
