Crock

Date: ca. 1843 - 1850

This stoneware crock is marked with a “5” inside a circle, which means that it can hold five gallons.  Potter Solomon Bell was born in Hagerstown, and moved with his family to Winchester in 1824.  When he was twenty-one years old, Solomon went to work for his brother John, who by then had moved from Chambersburg to Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.  Solomon worked with John for three years, and then returned to Winchester in 1843.  In 1845 he joined another brother, Samuel, who was working in Strasburg.  Solomon was a full partner in Samuel’s pottery by 1850.
