Date: ca. 1790 - 1800

This reversible overshoot coverlet features a woven border, cotton fringe, and globe and star ornaments.  The maker’s name appears as part of the design.  According to the official record of Frederick County marriages, a Phoebe Powell married Thomas Singer on April 2, 1800.  The spelling in the record differs from that on the coverlet, but it is likely that this is the same woman who made this quilt; research to date finds no other woman with that name in the Valley in the early 1800s.  Phoebe Powell probably made this bed covering in anticipation of her wedding day.
