Cabriole Armchair

Date: 1790 - 1805

This armchair is one from a set of armchairs that ranks among the most elegant sets made in Philadelphia immediately after the Revolution. Its beauty is seen in the generous proportions, the sophisticated design of the back, the carved ornaments, and the excessive upholstery necessary to cover the back and seat. Only a handful of armchairs survive from this stunning set, which originally numbered more than twelve.
