English, ca. 1777 - 1818

Date: 1810 - 1815

More than anything else, a bookcase speaks of refinement and education. At the time this one was made, people were displaying their books throughout the house and not just in the library. For display in rooms other than a library, then, a low bookcase such as this was ideal. It has a marble top, which conveniently provides a good spot to display small ornaments and a clock alongside the books. The style of this case is restrained English Empire. Exotic woods with dramatic grains give flair to this functional piece, as do its gilded wood surfaces.
