Free Admission for Active Military & Their Families

$10 Admission Includes Music and Admission to Museum Gardens & Galleries

Winchester, VA 9/01/16…Music from the 1970s by the Robbie Limon Band and admission to the gardens and galleries will highlight the summer’s final Gardens at Night event at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) on Friday, September 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition, those attending will be able to purchase food, beer, and wine.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Navy Federal Credit Union, admission to Gardens at Night is free to all active military personnel and their families. Event admission is also free to ages 12 and under and MSV Members. The ticket price for all others, which includes the concert and admission to the MSV seven-acre gardens and exhibitions, is $10.

According to MSV Community Programs Manager Autumn Gray, the Robbie Limon Band is an MSV audience favorite. She adds that the band is returning to Gardens at Night by popular demand, and (weather permitting) the band’s MSV performance will include a large video screen where rock music videos will be projected during the concert.

A popular Shenandoah Valley musician and award-winning entertainer who mixes solo and band appearances with acting and singing roles at professional theaters, Robbie Limon has been part of the Valley’s music scene for more than a decade. He has recorded six CDs and portrayed, to great acclaim, both Hank Williams Sr. and Buddy Holly in professional theatres across the United States. A musician who brings his love of 1970s-era songwriters to each performance, Limon and his band will play an eclectic mix of music by the Eagles, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doobie Brothers, and more during its MSV concert.

Along with live music, Gardens at Night includes free children’s activities. Youngsters will be able to explore the gardens with a seek-and-find game, Can You Find This? In addition, from 6 to 8 p.m. kids may play a variety of lawn games, including Frisbee, hula hoops, and bean bag toss.

Throughout the evening the gardens and its galleries will be open. Along with colorful seasonal blooms, the gardens include statues and fountains. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the newly opened exhibition And Still We Rise: African American Story Quilts. On view in the Changing Exhibitions Gallery, the exhibition narrates four centuries of African American history through the display of nearly 70 handcrafted story quilts. A traveling exhibition on a national tour, And Still We Rise is presented by the Women of Color Quilters Network in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The exhibition’s display at the MSV is sponsored by BB&T and Shenandoah Country Q102 and presented in collaboration with the Winchester Area NAACP.

Those attending Gardens at Night at the MSV also may purchase food and drinks at the event. Sodexo catering will serve a buffet dinner for $10 per plate that will include chicken barbecue, vegetarian barbecue, jumbo beef hot dogs, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, a green bean and tomato salad, watermelon, cookies, and ice cream novelties. Cheese and grape trays will be available for $5. Drinks available for purchase include bottled water and soda ($2), domestic and craft beer ($5), and wine by the 12-ounce glass ($8) or bottle ($25). Cash sales are preferred. No outside food or drinks will be permitted in the concert area.

The gates, gardens, and galleries will open at 6 p.m.; the music will begin at 7 p.m. The concert will take place on the lawn by the MSV. Concert-goers should bring their own chairs. Gardens at Night is a rain or shine event; attendees should dress for the weather. In the event of rain, the stage will be covered by a tent and children’s activities will move inside.

The Gardens at Night concert series is sponsored by Navy Federal Credit Union and Shenandoah Country Q102.

The MSV is located at 901 Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia. The MSV complex—which includes galleries and exhibitions, the Glen Burnie House (not open during Gardens at Night), and the gardens—is open Tuesday through Sunday.
