More Than 125 Varieties of Plants Available for Purchase Admission to Plant Sale is Free

Winchester, VA 5/14/18…More than 115 types of plants will be available for purchase at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) Heritage Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19. Admission to the plant sale is free.

Organized by the MSV, the Heritage Plant Sale features more than 1,800 plants, all selected by the Museum’s horticultural experts for their ability to thrive in Shenandoah Valley gardens. The sale will include perennials, shrubs, and a variety of trees, annuals, and heirloom vegetables.

According to MSV Director of Gardens Perry Mathewes, the plants offered at the Heritage Plant Sale will be ready for immediate planting. He notes that many of the plants available have stood the test of time in historic gardens, including sweetshrub and soapwort, while other plants being offered are unusual and difficult to find, such as monkshood and black snakeroot.

Throughout the Heritage Plant Sale, MSV gardens and grounds staff will be available to answer questions about the planting, care, and maintenance of the plants available for purchase.

Many of the plants available for purchase may be found in the MSV’s seven-acre Glen Burnie Gardens, including anise hyssop (Perennial Garden), blue-eyed grass (Kathie’s Spring Garden), cardinal flower (Herbaceous Border), peony (Green Garden), sweet woodruff (Herb Garden), and bleeding heart (Water Garden). Proceeds from the Heritage Plant Sale will support the care and maintenance of the MSV gardens. A detailed listing of plants offered at the sale may be found at www.theMSV.org/plantsale.

A preview of plants available for purchase will be offered to MSV Members from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. MSV Members will receive a 10% discount on Heritage Plant Sale purchases. Those interested in attending the preview and receiving the Members’ discount may join the MSV at a special membership table open during the plant sale.

Heritage Plant Sale attendees interested in touring the MSV gardens and exhibitions may store their purchased plants in a plant holding area. While MSV admission fees are not required to browse the plant sale, admission is required to tour the MSV galleries and gardens.

A regional cultural center, the MSV is located at 901 Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia. The MSV includes galleries, the Glen Burnie House, and seven acres of gardens. The galleries and exhibitions are open year-round; the house and gardens are open April through December. The award-winning traveling exhibition Nature Connects®: Art with LEGO® Bricks is on view in the MSV gardens now through September 3, 2018. Admission to the outdoor exhibition—which includes admission to the MSV galleries—is $10 for adults, $8 for youth ages 13–18 and seniors, and $5 for ages 5–12. Exhibition admission is free to ages 4 and under and to MSV Members. Additional details are available at www.theMSV.org or by calling 540-662-1473, ext. 235. –END–
