More Than 110 Varieties of Plants Available for Purchase

Admission to Plant Sale is Free

Winchester, VA 5/15/19…More than 110 types of plants will be available for purchase at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) Heritage Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18. Admission to the plant sale is free.

Organized by the MSV, the Heritage Plant Sale features nearly 1,800 plants, all selected by the museum’s horticultural experts for their ability to thrive in Shenandoah Valley gardens. The sale will include perennials, shrubs, trees, annuals, and heirloom vegetables.

According to MSV Director of Gardens Perry Mathewes, the plants offered at the Heritage Plant Sale will be ready for immediate planting. He notes that many of the plants available have stood the test of time in gardens, including peonies and foxglove, while other plants being offered are unusual, such as turtlehead and the herb marsh mallow.

Throughout the Heritage Plant Sale, MSV gardens and grounds staff will be available to answer questions about the planting, care, and maintenance of the plants available for purchase.

Many of the plants available for purchase may be found in the MSV’s seven-acre Glen Burnie Gardens, including anise hyssop (Perennial Garden), chocolate mint (Vegetable Garden), cardinal flower (Kathie’s Spring Garden), peony (Green Garden), sweet woodruff (Herb Garden), and Solomon’s seal (Water Garden). Proceeds from the Heritage Plant Sale will support the care and maintenance of the MSV gardens. A detailed listing of plants available for purchase is available at

A preview of plants will be offered to MSV members from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. MSV members will receive a 10% discount on Heritage Plant Sale purchases. Those interested in attending the preview and receiving the members’ discount may join the MSV at a special membership table open throughout the plant sale.

Heritage Plant Sale attendees interested in touring the MSV gardens and exhibitions may store their purchased plants in a plant holding area. While admission to the plant sale is free to all, MSV admission fees apply for entrance to the gardens and galleries.

Along with visiting the MSV gardens and galleries, those attending the plant sale on Saturday may also browse a trunk show featuring garden-inspired pottery, silk scarves, jewelry, and table linens made by Shenandoah Valley artist Neena Jhaveri. Held in the museum lobby from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. (Saturday only), the trunk show features works by Jhaveri that include live flowers, herbs, and greenery from the museum’s Glen Burnie Gardens. Admission to the trunk show is free to all.
