Gift from Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., Allows MSV to Significantly Expand Free Admission Program

Winchester, VA 6/9/14…Beginning June 11, 2014, thanks to a generous gift from Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) will offer free admission to the entire site every Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

According to MSV Executive Director Dana Hand Evans, the Shockey support allows the MSV to expand its existing free admission program on Wednesday mornings. Evans adds that the MSV is thrilled to expand this free admission program in such a significant manner. “Such support of the corporate community is absolutely critical to the Museum’s ability to achieve its mission to preserve and enrich the cultural life and heritage of the Shenandoah Valley,” she notes.

According to Jeff Boehm, president of Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., the firm was pleased to have the opportunity to support the MSV in its efforts to make the site even more accessible to the Shenandoah Valley community. “We are proud of the work we’ve done in the Glen Burnie House. We want to share that with everyone, as well as help build excitement about what the MSV offers today and what it hopes to offer free of charge in the future.”

Along with being the general contractor for the Museum’s just-completed Glen Burnie House renovation project, Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., was part of the team that worked with the MSV to develop a Master Plan for the Museum’s 214-acre campus.

Along with sponsoring the free Wednesday admission program, Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc., also has provided financial support to help celebrate the reopening of the Glen Burnie House with The Sixties Summer Soirée from 7 to 10 p.m. on June 28. Harkening back to the heyday of entertaining by MSV benefactor Julian Wood Glass Jr. (1910–1992), the event will feature a 1960s-inspired hors d’oeuvres and cocktail menu, music, and dancing. Tickets, at $25 per person for MSV Members or $35 for all others, may be purchased online.

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is located at 901 Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia.  The MSV is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Museum is open year-round; the house and gardens are open April through October. On days other than Wednesday, admission—which includes entrance to the house, gardens, and Museum—is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and youth (age 13 to 18). Museum admission is always free to ages 12 and under and to MSV Members. Additional information is available at www.theMSV.org or by calling 540-662-1473, ext. 235.
