Fall Foliage…and Flowers!

As the days shorten and the nights get cooler, it is obvious that fall is here. The leaves in the garden are starting to put on their show. Green ash leaves lighten into yellow and the sugar maples are starting to brighten as the leaves turn to orange. Soon other trees will follow and turn various shades of red, yellow and orange. Yes, fall is a great time to visit the garden.

All Choked Up

One thing I love about this garden is the opportunity to introduce plants to people who may not have met them otherwise. The vegetable garden has been a good place for that this year. It is fun to see visitors discover that some of the foods such as asparagus and peanuts come from some pretty cool looking plants. One plant that many folks have noticed is the artichoke.

We Are Out to Get You

We try to make this garden a welcoming place. Staff is friendly and greet our guests as they arrive. We try to keep the place tidy—daily we blow off the walks, weed the flower beds, pick up trash, etc. We want our guests to feel comfortable and at ease as they stroll the grounds. However, some of our plants are not so charitable. In fact, they are out to get you.

Weeds!

There are three things that take up a gardener’s day this time of year: mowing, watering and pulling weeds. Weeds seem to be the worst. Our staff can spend an entire day pulling weeds and come in the next morning to find more. If he saw what we were doing, Sisyphus would be thankful he only has to roll a rock.
