Drawing on research from his 2021 book, Slavery and Freedom in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War Era, Shenandoah University history professor Jonathan A. Noyalas will explore obstacles the Valley’s African Americans confronted in the Civil War’s immediate aftermath and ways they attempted to overcome those challenges. This session will explore Freedmen’s Schools, labor contracts, property ownership, and Emancipation commemorations. Bring your lunch and spend an hour with an expert.
